Education was one of the most affected sectors after three years of pandemic, leading to an increased demand for universities and certified study programs, considered the Accreditation Council for Administrative, Accounting and Related Sciences (CACECA).

“Educational lags can affect the reputation of various educational institutions, causing a decrease in confidence on the part of students, parents and even employers, having a negative effect on the demand and enrollment of academic programs,” highlighted Eduardo Ávalos. Méndez, director of operations of the International Agency for Educational Quality (AICE) and the Accreditation Council for Administrative, Accounting, and Related Sciences (CACECA).

Under this context and given the challenges that the future holds, higher education institutions and their academic programs must comply with standards that specialized organizations are dedicated to evaluating.

Accreditations become more important when it comes to choosing a professional career, hence universities must accredit whether their programs meet quality criteria; This ensures the professional development of the teacher and better opportunities for the student, such as international exchanges.

When choosing a university…

Higher education schools that accredit their programs provide guarantees that they are providing students with the necessary tools to integrate into the labor market.

To find out if a school and its study programs are certified, just ask the institution directly or do an online search.

“Parents or heads of family can ask the institution directly with the program director and/or faculty director. Some Higher Education Institutions have these recognitions displayed for their students to see when entering the offices,” adds Ávalos.

In Mexico there is also the COPAES (Council for the Accreditation of Higher Education A.C.) which, in addition to being the regulatory body for the accreditation of academic programs in Mexico, has a list of accredited programs and a list of accreditations available on its website. by federal entities that can be consulted by anyone at any time.

On the other hand, there is the ANUIES (National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions), a non-governmental organization that brings together the main higher education institutions in the country, which seeks to promote comprehensive improvement in the fields of teaching, research and extension. of culture.

How are universities evaluated?

For universities and their study plans to pass the test, there are agencies that are responsible for grading them.

CACECA is one of those organizations that certifies and accredits universities and their study programs, in the economic-administrative area.

Although the process is voluntary, the first step is to make a formal request to CACECA; Then, official documentation is sent, a contract is signed and payment for the procedure is made by the institution.

The people responsible for accreditation take a workshop to carry out the procedure; They fill out a self-assessment instrument that CACECA analyzes prior to their accreditation visit.

Subsequently, a visit is scheduled by an evaluation committee, made up of external experts, who issue an opinion; This document is reviewed by a CACECA ruling committee, which finally determines whether an institution is accredited or not.

Does Mexico pass the test?

Compared to other Latin American countries, Mexico has a fairly developed accreditation system.

Accreditations are carried out by recognized organizations such as CACECA, which are endorsed by the Council for the Accreditation of Higher Education (COPAES). For its part, COPAES focuses on evaluating the quality of education and comprehensive training that institutions offer.

At the end of January 2023, there were more than four thousand registrations of educational programs with an accreditation/reaccreditation process for the different teaching fields, such as business sciences, social sciences, health sciences, among others.

In addition, there are 153 institutions with accreditation, representing an increase of 13% with the previous report.
